What exactly are Indices?

Indices can be best conceptualized as a 'cluster' or 'basket' of stocks that encapsulates and measures the performance of a specific sector or industry in a market.

For example, consider the FTSE 100, which represents the top 100 companies traded on the London Stock Exchange. If the share prices of these constituent companies surge, the FTSE 100 will inherently appreciate in value alongside them.

However, since indices are not tangible products, they cannot be traded directly. Instead, they can be traded indirectly through financial derivatives such as futures in our context - Contracts for Difference (CFDs).
